Learning by Hearings announces new 8th grade materials, a new ‘What is Oversight?’ primer video, and an asynchronous professional development!
In this free 8th grade U.S. History inquiry lesson plan, students examine the Senate investigation into John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry to explore national divisions over slavery before the Civil War and how government, artists, and citizens shape historical interpretation. Students will ultimately answer the Compelling Question: What is John Brown’s legacy?
Made with Detroit PBS, our new video ‘What is Oversight?’ is a 2-minute primer on congressional oversight for use with all Learning by Hearings materials.
Would you like to learn how to use congressional inquiries to bring U.S. history and civics to life for your students? What about an overview of the Inquiry Design Model? With videos produced in collaboration with Detroit PBS, we invite you to participate in our brand-new, FREE, asynchronous professional development course.
Over 3 modules, participants will learn about the Levin Center and Learning by Hearings; familiarize themselves with the Inquiry Design Model; and spend time digging into lesson plans and our congressional oversight simulation.
Participants in Michigan will receive 2 SCECHs upon completion of the course and a certificate of completion for their records.
